People say that their time as a student will be the best three years of their life. And we agree, it can definitely be.
But, it can also be a very expensive moment. With registration rates and life costs, your expenses can really add.
To help you separate the fact of fiction, we have broken down the numbers to solve the cost of going to university in the United Kingdom. And we will explain how this is different from what you will really end up paying.
How much does the university cost in the United Kingdom?
Giving an exact figure about how much it costs to go to college is difficult. There are so many variables that affect the final total. But, using the official data and findings of our own National Survey of Money Student Money (NSMS), we can give an approximate cost of Around £ 68,349.
How do we get to that figure? Since academic year 2025/26, the cost of registration for most students in the United Kingdom is around £ 9,535 one year (More about this shortly). And most courses tend to last three years. Then, let’s say that registration rates alone will cost most students around £ 28,605 in the course of their title.
Life costs are a bit more difficult to make registration rates. They are subject to much more variation. For this estimate, we will use the average annual life cost of our NSM: £ 13,704 (or £ 41,112 in three years). But, like We will explain laterThis figure could be greater or lesser depending on some factors.
If we take both figures and apply them to a three -year title, we can say that it costs Around £ 69,717 To go to university in the United Kingdom. This breaks about £ 23,239 a year.
Although this sounds like a terrifying number, it is unlikely to pay so much. And you You won’t need to pay That when you are really a student. Discover how the amount you pay is very different from What really costs.
Keep in mind that these numbers are only for students from the United Kingdom. Registration fees for international students differ greatly. Rates for most subjects are somewhere between £ 10,000 and £ 20,000 per year. However, the cost can be much more depending on the degree and the university you choose.
How much do the registration rates cost in 2025/26?

* Irish citizens must pay Ruk registration fees in Scotland. However, if they meet the residence criteriaThey can be eligible for full SAAS funds.
When we touch previously, there is no registration fee established in the United Kingdom. On the other hand, the amount that will be charged every year depends on where you are and where you are studying in the United Kingdom.
For example, if I would like to know what the registration rates of the University of Edinburgh were, the question would not be as simple as “What are the Edinburgh rates?” On the other hand, as Edinburgh is in Scotland, it must verify how the registration rates in Scotland vary according to the part of the United Kingdom (or beyond) of the one you are.
It will notice in the previous table that, although most annual registration rates are £ 9,535, some are much lower. And, as mentioned above, international students (including those of the EU) often have higher registration rates.
For Scottish students, their enrollment will be free if you study in Scotland. EU students in Scotland that began in 2020/21 or before will have a free registration during their entire title. But, EU students who began in the academic year 2021/22 or later will have to pay rates.
Similarly, the enrollment rates for Northern Ireland students studying in Northern Ireland are approximately half (£ 4,855) what they are in the rest of the United Kingdom. EU students who started in 2020/21 or before still have access to these cutting price rates for the total duration of their courses. However, EU students who began in 2021/22 or later are not eligible for local rate charges.
Life costs at the university
The media seem to intend to focus on the price of registration. But, life costs are possibly the true financial concern for most students in the United Kingdom. And, as we explain previously, it is almost impossible to give a precise figure about how much it will cost.
That said, we can make a reasonable estimate based where you will be studying.
Every year, thousands of students participate in our National Money Survey for Students. As part of the survey, we ask the students to tell us how much they spend every month. From this, we can give it a breakdown of how much it is likely to spend every month at the university.
The following graph offers an overview of the average expenditure habits of the United Kingdom student every month. As you can see, the rent is, with much, the highest cost (£ 529), which represents almost half of the monthly spending of £ 1,142. The food (including conclusions, food and edible) is the second largest expense, for a total of around £ 195 per month, everything in everything.
There are also some ‘hidden’ costs found in the categories below. Whether you are paying to rent your graduation dress or at the end of the rate to join a society, things can accumulate.
And similarly, different students with different needs can incur different expenses. Your course may require you to buy special equipment.
Or, if you have a disability, you can find that there are additional costs linked to going to college. However, the assignment of disabled students should help you cover them.
Of course, these figures can be different from the real costs of living in your university.
The rental price, transport and exit vary greatly depending on where it is in the United Kingdom. That is why we doubt putting an exact number on the cost of going to university.
Instead, discover how much the average student spends In each University of the United Kingdom. Simply consult our guide on students’ life costs for the complete list.
And if you are thinking that “UNI will not cost much less if you study elsewhere,” think again.
As an example, in our survey, the city, the students of the University of London spent £ 696 per month on life costs (excluding rent).
If we look at West Midlands, things are quite different. Here, the students surveyed are spending only £ 480 per month (again, excluding rent). That is £ 216 less than what students are spending in London.
It is really worth considering these figures when choosing a university.
How much do you really pay for the university?
The numbers that we have outlined are great, you can’t deny that. But, when it comes to student financing, remember that the cost of the university is Not the same Like what you pay.
Almost all first -time students in the United Kingdom have the right to a registration fee loan. This will cover the cost of registration in its entirety. Keep in mind that this is only the case for local rates students. International students do not have access to student finances in the United Kingdom.
As for their life costs, most of the students in the United Kingdom are eligible for a maintenance loan to help them. It is worth noting that the loan may not be enough to cover their life costs completely. You can find more financing options in our great guide for students’ finances.
Student loans are not like ordinary loans. You will only pay 9% of your earnings on a threshold. If your salary falls below that figure, automatically stop paying.
In addition, any pending student debt in its name is canceled around 25, 30 or 40 years after graduating, depending on which student loan plan is. This is the case regardless of how much or how little he has paid.
Our student loan refund calculator takes into account all this by calculating how much it is likely to end up paying.
We explain this in a lot More details in our guide to pay your student loan, but the message to take home is that you should not be discouraged for the price of going to university. There is a good possibility that you don’t pay anything close.
