FlyFin Tax is a bookkeeping and tax filing service powered by a combination of artificial intelligence and human CPAs. FlyFin is designed to help freelancers identify and maximize their deductions on items that might be easy to miss, such as home office expenses, cell phone bills, and work-related travel expenses.

This review covers its key features, pricing, pros and cons, and some FlyFin alternatives, to help you decide if FlyFin is right for you. As always, you can check out our list of the best tax filing apps, which is updated annually.

FlyFin Tax – Is it really free?

FlyFin Tax offers a free 7-day trial. This allows freelancers to use the app to identify and categorize discounts. For the first week, you can try out the software before committing to the paid plan.

Users who continue with the Standard plan ($192 per year) can get a CPA to file their federal and state taxes as part of the service. You’ll need to upgrade to the Premium plan ($348 per year) if you have an S-Corp or want video meetings with your CPA.

What’s new in 2026?

FlyFin has updated its AI capabilities for 2026. Its AI tool can now review your expenses to identify potential deductions, which is a huge benefit. As with all tax software, FlyFin has updated its software to recognize the latest deductions, credits and other limits for 2025 tax returns (filed in 2026).

Accountants also ensure returns comply with the latest tax law updates, such as changes related to health insurance, state and local taxes (SALT), self-employment taxes, and updated brackets and limits for credits and deductions.

Will FlyFin make filing taxes easy in 2026?

FlyFin simplifies the tax filing process for freelancers with a two-pronged approach to filing tax returns. First, the company finds tax deductions for freelancers and other business owners directly from connected financial accounts.

It uses artificial intelligence to help you find, verify, and record all deductible expenses. You can use FlyFin automated bookkeeping year-round, which makes tax time much easier. You can access income and expense reports based on data collected and analyzed by artificial intelligence.

Secondly, FlyFin Tax connects users with chartered accountants through the app. These certified public accountants can use FlyFin tax reports to quickly prepare self-employed tax returns.

The service is designed specifically for freelancers, although entrepreneurs and other small business owners may be able to use FlyFin. For example, gig workers, musicians, artists, and independent contractors may find FlyFin worthwhile.

Notable FlyFin Features

FlyFin’s easy-to-use bookkeeping technology and full-service tax preparation make it a standout for freelancers and others who blend their business and personal finances.

Tax returns prepared by the CPA

How it works: FlyFin downloads transactions from your bank and credit cards, and the tax preparer uses this information to complete and file your tax return.

FlyFin Tax users can have their tax returns prepared by a CPA. The tax assistant will gather all necessary information via video so that the CPA can prepare the filer’s tax return. With the Premium plan, you can meet with the CPA directly.

Artificial intelligence is designed to detect and record eligible expenses

FlyFin Tax has multiple algorithms trained to help different types of freelancers identify and record deductible expenses. The company offers an app with push notifications when a potential deductible expense is found. You can confirm expenses directly through the app with a swipe. If a user has questions about a particular expense, they can ask their assigned CPA directly through the app.

Option to export tax reports

Freelancers who want to file taxes on their own (or use a different tax software) can export reports that they can use to file taxes independently. But since you’re already paying for tax preparation as part of the membership, it would be an unnecessary expense.

Notable FlyFin Tax Disadvantages

Although FlyFin is an excellent product, there are some drawbacks to using this app. These are some things freelancers should consider.

You must upgrade to match your CPA

Freelancers who choose FlyFin Tax will need to upgrade to the Premium package to schedule meetings using their assigned CPA. You’ll also have to upgrade to the higher plan if you have an S-Corp and need 1120S and K-1 forms.

No mileage tracking

FlyFin covers almost all aspects of freelance bookkeeping, with the exception of mileage tracking. Freelancers will likely need to use an app like Everalnce or MileIQ to claim the appropriate discounts.

Billing is done annually

FlyFin is a tax and bookkeeping service that is billed annually. You cannot break down costs by month. For some employers, the somewhat hefty annual fee can put a strain on freelancers on a limited budget.

FlyFin Tax Plans and Pricing

Flyfin Their prices are published as a monthly feebut charges customers an annual fee. Once the 7-day free trial is completed, FlyFin customers will have to pay the full fee.

All plans include unlimited CPA advice regarding the deductible for certain expenses. Users simply ask to review the CPA to get an account, add some details, and get a CPA rating.

  • Freelancers and solo entrepreneurs
  • Anyone who doesn’t mind communicating via text only with their CPA.
  • S-Corps, K-1s, and other multi-person entities.
  • Anyone who wants video meetings with CPA.

How does FlyFin compare?

FlyFin Tax provides full-service tax filings and bookkeeping at a lower price than other leading tax filing services. For example, Picnic, which also matches tax filings with CPAs, starts filing its small business tax returns at $500. The cost goes up if you have additional filing needs.

If you want access to small business tax software but prefer to handle your own filing, you may want to choose TurboTax from Intuit. It offers premium DIY tax filing software for small businesses, but you can also work with an expert for an additional cost.

However, when I did the math on my taxes (filing my S-Corp with TaxAct and TurboTax for my personal taxes), I was paying $343. However, with FlyFin, I would pay $348 and a professional would take care of the taxes. Just a $5 difference to have a tax expert handle the hard work!

Is it safe and secure?

FlyFin Tax is a mobile-first technology company. It protects users’ financial information by communicating via a third-party technology called Plaid. Plaid only receives read access to the user’s account, so no funds can be stolen through FlyFin Tax or Plaid. The company also requires multi-factor authentication and allows users to set up FaceID for the second form of authentication.

The company also keeps tax data secure and encrypted when it doesn’t exist. All communication is done “face to face” via Zoom which tends to be a secure platform compared to other forms of communication.

Of course, FlyFin is an online tax company, and this means that user information is always at risk. Users should evaluate whether FlyFin’s protections are sufficient to give them confidence in the safety of their data.

Why should you trust us?

The College Investor team has spent years reviewing all of the best tax filing options, and our team has personal experience with the majority of tax software tools. I personally have been the main tax software reviewer since 2022, and have compared most of the major companies on the market.

Our Editor-in-Chief Robert Farrington has been trying and testing tax software tools since 2011, and has tested and tried almost every tax filing product. Moreover, our team has created rYou can find demos and video tours of all the major tax preparation companies on our YouTube channel.

We do taxes and want a good deal, just like you. We work hard to provide informed, honest opinions about every product we test.

Who is this for and is it worth it?

FlyFin Tax is an excellent deal for freelancers who don’t want to file their own taxes. The app costs less than $200 a year if you only need a Schedule C (not taxed as an S-Corp), and it solves the biggest tax-related struggles most freelancers face.

Filing tax returns for self-employed people is not a difficult task with tax software. But knowing whether expenses are deductible is a huge headache. FlyFin Tax removes this headache so freelancers can focus on growing their business instead of focusing on taxes.

During testing, we were also impressed with the quality of the in-app AI. It has aggregated the transactions so we can review an entire year’s worth in less than an hour.

Given the quality of the product and level of service, we believed there would be pricing difficulties or other unfair pricing schemes. However, the stated price appears to be the tax return price, even if you have additional complications, such as investments or rental properties.

We highly recommend this app for freelancers who want to simplify bookkeeping and file taxes at a reasonable price.
