Even if you are a poor college student, never think that you are too poor to get it Bedroom renters insurance. They can be a valuable tool, and they’re relatively inexpensive!
If you’ve ever been in a situation where your items were stolen or damaged by something you couldn’t control, you know how painful it can be. One of the best ways to alleviate this ordeal is to get renters insurance.
Contrary to what you might think, renters insurance is more of an investment than an expense.
Fortunately, it’s not expensive and you can get it for $5 per month.
The benefits you gain from getting renters insurance outweigh the cost by at least 1,000 times.
Your laptop, cameras, clothes, and even the cost of living in a hotel if your bedroom sustains physical damage can all be covered under your renters insurance plan.
So, if you plan to live in a shared dorm next school year, I highly recommend that you invest in a renters insurance policy to protect you and your personal belongings.
So what is the best insurance for bedroom renters? In this post we will discuss that.
Before you start purchasing renters insurance on your own, be sure to check with your or your parents’ auto insurance company first.
Check with your current insurance company first
Some homeowners insurance companies and auto insurance companies offer renters insurance for bedrooms as well. If your parents already have an existing insurance policy, this should be your first stop.
Before you look at any other plan, call your current insurance company and ask them about college housing renters insurance. You’ll probably get it at another discounted price (they’ll bundle it so the total cost is lower) or you may get it for free.
Note: Make sure to ask about dorms specifically. Some policies exclude student housing.
Ask your school for advice
Some universities have relationships with insurance companies where students receive special discounts for dorm room renters insurance.
Talk to someone who works in your residential life and your housing office to learn more about this topic. Many schools will actually recommend a service like GradGuard as part of the housing registration process.
Now let’s talk about the best bedroom renters insurance you can invest in starting today.

Renters insurance in the USA
If one of you or your parents is currently or has been part of the military, you may be able to get great renters insurance rates at USAA.
The nice thing about USAA’s plan is that it has expanded coverage that most other companies don’t provide.
Coverage under USAA insurance includes:
- Property protection
- Flood protection (this is usually an additional cost over other companies’ policies)
- Earthquake coverage
- Covering the costs of replacing items
- Ability to bring renters insurance when you move
Of course, there are other renters insurance programs you can check out — but when it comes to the best value for your bedroom, these plans are the best.

A few things to note about bedroom renters insurance
It’s important to make sure you understand what renters insurance covers.
- If you have a roommate, your insurance policy doesn’t cover their stuff. Hence, you can encourage them to get their own products so that they are protected.
- Keep a record of your valuables and get proof of them. This can include receipts, photos, and even deeds for those items (for high-end properties). Having these things will make it easier if you have to file a claim on your renters insurance.
- If your dorm room has a pest problem, you must inform the university authorities so that the problem can be resolved as quickly as possible. Renters insurance policies do not cover pest destruction.
- Renters insurance also doesn’t cover accidental damage to your items. If you accidentally spill your coffee on your computer, renters insurance won’t cover it.
- Always apply common sense in your bedroom so that you do not become responsible for destroying someone else’s property.
As I said before, renters insurance is an investment, not an expense. The money you’ll save if anything happens to the items in your bedroom is worth the $5 to $10 per month you’ll pay.
So make sure not to skip it.
Options for off-campus students
If you’re a student but live in an apartment or house off-campus, you still need renters insurance. In fact, some landlords require you to have renters insurance when you sign a lease.
